“The Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; he will lead them to springs of living water. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.” Revelation 7:17
What will heaven be like? We all have different thoughts of how heaven will look and what we will do in heaven. The Apostle John got to see a glimpse of heaven. It was so wonderful that he had a difficult time finding words to describe it. The best he could do was to try and paint some pictures for our mind’s eye to see. Those pictures fall short of the true brilliance and beauty of heaven. What we do know is that it will be so beautiful we will never want to leave.
John tells us what he saw in Revelation 21: “The wall was made of jasper, and the city of pure gold, as pure as glass. The foundations of the city walls were decorated with every kind of precious stone. The first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third chalcedony, the fourth emerald, the fifth sardonyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst. The twelve gates were twelve pearls, each gate made of a single pearl. The great street of the city was of pure gold, like transparent glass.”
That picture is too amazing to imagine, but that’s not all. All the streets in heaven will lead to the throne of Jesus. There we will see him in his glory. We will be face to face with Jesus. What a glorious sight that will be! John said in Revelation 7:17: “The Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; he will lead them to springs of living water. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.” Did you hear the two descriptions used for Jesus? He is called both the Lamb and the Shepherd. Old Testament lambs were sacrificed on an altar. That sacrifice symbolized taking away the sins of the people. Jesus is called the Lamb of God because he was sacrificed on a cross. Jesus’ sacrifice took away our sins. We also notice in Revelation that Jesus was called the Shepherd. We call him the Good Shepherd. As Jesus sits on his throne he appears as the Lamb of God and our Good Shepherd. What a marvelous picture of Paradise! We have something very wonderful to look forward to!
My faith looks up to Thee,
Thou Lamb of Calvary, Savior divine,
Now hear me while I pray;
Take all my guilt away;
Oh, let me from this day be wholly Thine. Amen.
