GOD GIVES US FOOD

GOD GIVES US FOOD

“The eyes of all look to you, and you give them their food at the proper time. You open your hand and satisfy the desires of every living thing.” Psalm 145:15,16

We all love to eat! Some of us like chocolate and pizza, while others like zucchini and Brussel sprouts. God blesses us with a variety of foods because he knows we like to eat.

God designed our bodies with a very important system inside. It can turn a thick steak into food that is so tiny it can pass through our bloodstream. The food trip begins in our mouths where we mix saliva juice with the steak and begin to chew it into smaller pieces. Then it moves down our esophagus. Immediately after the food falls into our stomachs a valve closes so it doesn’t back up again. The stomach acts like a cement mixer where special liquids are added to the food. Soon it becomes a thin paste. Next it moves into our 22 foot long small intestine where it is divided into different nutrients that our bodies need to grow and be healthy. Other organs send juices to the intestine to work like a team preparing the food for our blood stream. Whatever food is left behind is passed into the large intestine where it prepares to leave the body. What a marvelous system God designed.

One day Jesus fed 5,000 people with a couple of fish and a few loaves of bread. But before he passed out the food Jesus looked up to heaven and gave thanks. That is a wonderful thing that Jesus taught us. We should ask God to bless our food and thank him for it whenever we sit down to eat. There are many prayers we can learn that ask God to bless our food and that give thanks.

Did you know that Jesus once said that he was like food for us?  Jesus said: “I am the bread of life. Whoever eats of me will never go hungry” (John 6:35). Jesus meant that if we believe he is our Savior who died and rose for us, we won’t need to look for any other spiritual food. We have all we need to be saved and go to heaven. He fills us with all of his wonderful blessings.

Let’s remember who it is that provides all the food for our bodies and souls. Then let’s take a few moments to say “Thank you.”

Thank you for the world so sweet,
Thank you for the food we eat.
Thank you for the birds that sing,
Thank you God for everything. Amen.
