CHERUBIM . . .
“After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.” Genesis 3:24
Cherubim are mentioned over 60 times in the NIV Bible. They are a special group of winged angels called upon to serve and protect the glory of God. We see them already at work in Genesis 3:24 when God placed cherubim with a flaming sword at the entrance to the Garden of Eden, as we read in our reference, “After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.”
The tabernacle was designed with curtained walls adorned with beautifully embroidered cherubim. The Ark of the Covenant also had a gold lid called the Mercy Seat that had large figures of two cherubim facing each other with their wings touching.
David mentions the cherubim when he writes a song of thanksgiving in 2 Samuel 22:7,11: “In my distress I called to the LORD; I called out to my God. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came to his ears. . . . He mounted the cherubim and flew; he soared on the wings of the wind.”
In Ezekiel 10:4,5 God showed Ezekiel a vision of the destruction of Jerusalem. “The glory of the Lord rose from above the cherubim and moved to the threshold of the temple. The cloud filled the temple, and the court was full of the radiance of the glory of the Lord. The sound of the wings of the cherubim could be heard as far away as the outer court, like the voice of God Almighty when he speaks.”
We thank God for the wonderful blessing of angels, including the cherubim. They work tirelessly guarding and protecting us as they carry out the will of our loving God.
