CEDAR . . .
“The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon.” Psalm 92:12
Cedar trees are grown around the world. They are beautiful, stately evergreen trees that are known for their durability and resistance to decay. Cedar trees can grow to over 120 feet tall and live over a hundred years. Cedars also have medicinal value to treat coughs and stomach pains. The Egyptians used cedar resin to mummify the dead.
Cedar wood is also versatile for building purposes. It is strong and durable and emits a very pleasant smell. Cedar chests and closets are lined with the aromatic wood.
In Palestine, the best cedar trees were from the northern area of Lebanon, famous for its forests of cedar trees. Once they were a major export for Lebanon and a source of great wealth. King David used cedars from Lebanon for his personal palace. The beautiful temple was lined with cedar wood purchased from Hiram, the king of Lebanon. Solomon also built his palace using that same wood. First Kings 7:2 says, “He built the Palace of the Forest of Lebanon . . . with four rows of cedar columns supporting trimmed cedar beams.” It was also used extensively in the temple. “The inside of the temple was cedar, carved with gourds and open flowers. Everything was cedar; no stone was to be seen” (1 Kings 6:18).
These trees represent the strength and beauty we receive from the Lord. Through faith in him, we grow to be strong and durable and a sweet aroma to those around us. May we continue to use the blessings we have for the beauty and glory of God’s kingdom.
