Jesus said: “I am the way and the truth and the life.”John 14:6
TOPIC: Jesus comforts us with the words that he is the way, truth, and life.
BACKGROUND: It was Maundy Thursday night and Jesus and the Twelve were eating the Passover meal in the Upper Room. That night Jesus spoke about many things that cover five chapters in the book of John.
What was going on in the minds of Christ’s followers that night? We can understand their confusion when Jesus told them he would be with them only a very short time. He was going to another place, but they would know the way to get there. Yet he promised to return. What? Where? How long?
Thomas was concerned. He loved his Master and wanted to remain with him. “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” (John 14:5). Then Jesus spoke the words that have become dear to every believer since then, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (14:6).
There is but one way to heaven, and that is through Jesus, the gate to Paradise. Acts 4:12 echoes this sentiment, “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” Is it any wonder the early Christian church was called The Way?
John loved writing about Christ who is the perfect truth. He mentions the word dozens of times, beginning in his first chapter, “We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth” (1:14).
Forty-one times John mentions the life in his gospel. Christ is also the life of every believer. John 1:4 says, “In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.” How blessed we are that we have come to know the one who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life!
PRAYER THOUGHT: by James McGranahan
To Christ the Way, the Truth, the Life,
I come, no more to roam;
He’ll guide me to my Father’s house,
To my eternal home.
