“Who laid its cornerstone?” Job 38:6
Constructing a building in ancient times was much more difficult than now. Today, when a site is planned for a building, we hire surveyors to carefully map out the area where the building is to be set. These people use many sophisticated devices to determine the exact site.
In Bible times they needed to rely on a different method. Before the building was started, they searched for a perfect stone to serve as the corner of the building. That stone determined the exact direction of the walls, making a very square corner. It was usually a large stone and very solid. The cornerstone was the stone on which the entire building was constructed.
In the Bible we find the word cornerstone given another meaning. Already in the book of Isaiah, we see a prophecy that says Jesus will be our cornerstone. “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation” (Isaiah 28:16).
That thought is carried into the New Testament. Paul writes in Ephesians 2:19-21, “You are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens . . . built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. In him the whole building is joined together.”
Jesus is the cornerstone on which our faith is founded and the entire Church is built. He is the center of our life. He sets the standard for us. We rely on Jesus and put our faith and trust in him. He is the perfect cornerstone!
