EYE-OPENING TRUTHS
Elisha prayed, “Open his eyes, Lord, so that he may see.” 2 Kings 6:17
Eyes are important. Just ask Elisha and his servant. In 2 Kings 6 we see Elisha and his servant completely surrounded by an enemy army. It appears there was no way out of their terrible situation. First, God opened Elisha’s eyes, and he saw a second army of angels in fiery chariots surrounding the enemy. God’s warriors were poised and ready for battle. It was then that Elisha prayed that God would open his servant’s eyes that he too might see the glorious sight. “Elisha prayed, ‘Open his eyes, Lord, so that he may see’” (2 Kings 6:17).
Other eyes need to be opened to see physical things. It is estimated that 35 million people in our world are physically blind. Physical blindness is a trying disability because it robs a person of the beauties of God’s creation and brings with it many difficulties trying to function in a world of sight. Yet people who are blind often replace the disability with other strengths in their lives.
Dealing with physical blindness is difficult, yet there is another blindness, spiritual blindness. This blindness carries even more consequence. How many people in our world have spiritual blindness? Although they seem that all is well, Satan has filled their souls with darkness and blinded them to the love of God.
How sad it is to see acquaintances whose eyes are blind to the gospel message. God’s people pray daily that the Holy Spirit might remove the spiritual blindness of a lost loved one, a straying child, or a faltering friend. When God commissioned Paul to be his apostle, he told him, “I am sending you to them to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me” (Acts 26:17,18).
Our prayers should include those who are spiritually blind, asking the Lord to send his Spirit into their darkened hearts and light the spark of faith that they might see the one who came to bring light to the world.
Think of those in your life who are spiritually blind and pray for them today.
