I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.Philippians 4:11 |
A recent study showed that 100 years ago Americans had 70 wants in their lives they needed to be satisfied. The grandchildren of those same people now list 500 wants. When David was on the run from Absalom, he faced the problem of feeding his troops. Then he met Barzillai who generously fed David’s army. Later, David invited Barzillai to come to Jerusalem and retire there where all his needs would be met. Barzillai humbly refused. He was content to live out his years at home, and to be laid to rest in the family cemetery. God showers us with blessings until our cup runs over. Why is it then so difficult for us to be content with those blessings? How has Satan taken our focus off the blessings we have and diverted our attention to the things we don’t have? Hebrews 13:5 says it well, “Be content with what you have, because God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.’” Ask the Lord today to help you become more contented!
Digging deeper:
Read 2 Samuel 19:31-39, the heartwarming story of Barzillai.
Today my prayer includes . . .
thanks for this special blessing:
concern for this special person:
petition for this special problem:
A closing verse:
O that my heart might dwell aloof
From all created things,
And learn that wisdom from above
Where true contentment springs!
